Commission Harry and Poppy

Just finished this double pencil sketch of Harry (a Scottie) and Poppy (a Shih Tzu), as payment for some building work a builder did for me. We both benefitted, me with the work done in my art studio and him with this sketch of his two dogs, which is a Christmas present for his good wife.

I decided at the outset to sketch each dog inside it's own oval background, wasn't really sure if it would look OK, but it seems to work. The builder absolutely loved it.

Here are some WIP steps before the finished pieces:

Medium: Graphite pencil, leads, 2B, 7H, 6H, 5H and 2H
Paper: Goldline Bristol Board 220 gsm
Size: A3 (16.5” x 11.7” – 420×297mm)
Duration: 6 hours

This is a sketch of a wee Jack Russell, I have been sribbling for the past two days. Sketching a white dog really stretches my skills with a pencil, some of my students often ask me “How on earth do you sketch white fur with a dark pencil?” well truth be told, slowly, carefully and use very hard pencils.

The cushion the little fellow is sitting on took about as long as the dog itself. I kept scanning this sketch from start to finish and have a nice collection of images I was thinking of putting into a tutorial

Moss and Max

Commissioned sketch on A3 140gsm acid free cartridge paper using Hi-Polymer 2B, 5B, 4H and F graphite leads in Pentel mechanical pencils. This was a sketch of two hunting dogs (themn puppies). This took me over 8 days to complete.
